Rating Methodology

Every HSA provider in our directory is scored using a transparent, data-driven methodology. We evaluate 45+ providers across four weighted categories, drawing on a database of over 1.2 million data points.

Each provider's overall score is a weighted average of four category scores. Weights reflect what matters most to HSA account holders based on our consumer research.

Overall scores range from 1.0 to 5.0. Here's what each tier means for you as a consumer.

4.5 - 5.0Outstanding

Best-in-class providers excelling across all categories. Top recommendations for most users.

4.0 - 4.4Excellent

Strong providers with minor gaps. Excellent choices for users whose priorities align with the provider's strengths.

3.5 - 3.9Good

Solid providers with notable trade-offs. Worth considering if specific features match your needs.

3.0 - 3.4Fair

Average providers with meaningful weaknesses. Compare carefully with higher-rated alternatives before choosing.

Below 3.0Below Average

Providers with significant drawbacks in fees, features, or investment options. We recommend exploring other options.

Data Collection

We collect data directly from official provider websites, fee schedules, fund prospectuses, and SEC filings. We do not rely on self-reported data from providers unless independently verified.
